IMPORTANT NOTES
Advisory to Indian Students Seeking Admission in Georgia
In response to numerous inquiries from Indian students interested in pursuing medical studies in Georgia, the Georgian authorities have provided the following clarifications:
Duration of Undergraduate Medical (MD) Program:
- The undergraduate MD program in Georgia spans 6 years, in accordance with national regulations and Medical Sector Benchmarks required for state accreditation.
Duration of Internship/Clinical Rotations:
- Up to the 3rd year, students focus on pre-clinical subjects and acquire clinical skills in simulation centers. From the 4th year onward, MD students engage in mandatory clinical rotations, primarily in clinical settings during the 5th and 6th semesters, totaling approximately 120 ECTS credits over the last 4 semesters.
Internship Opportunities in Georgia:
- Georgian medical universities either have their own university clinics or establish partnerships (MoUs) with various clinics. These agreements specify the medical fields covered, student enrollment numbers, duration of internships, etc. Indian students, along with other foreign nationals, have equal access to these clinical opportunities, provided they adhere to the program’s curriculum. Additional clinical activities or internships at different clinics can be arranged in coordination with the university and clinics, with knowledge of the local language often beneficial.
Patient Interaction During Internships:
- Regardless of nationality, students in Georgia are permitted to physically examine and interact with patients under the supervision of instructors and with patient consent.
Registration Under Professional Regulatory Bodies:
- Upon completing the MD program, students, including Indian nationals, do not register under any regulatory body for independent medical practice. They typically undergo a national post-diploma qualification exam (PDQE), conducted in Georgian, enabling them to pursue postgraduate studies or residency in accredited clinics and hospitals. The exam is overseen by the Medical and Pharmaceutical Regulation Agency under the Ministry of Health.
Licensing to Practice in Georgia:
- Successful completion of the MD program, passing the PDQE, and completing specialized residency programs allows graduates, including Indian students, to seek employment in medical/clinical roles within Georgia. Independent practice is subject to local legal limits.
